Foursquare Launches Stand-Alone App for Businesses

Foursquare launched its second stand-alone mobile app today, bringing its desktop Web business venue management tools to mobile for small business owners.

The company launched its first mobile app in 2009.

The Foursquare for Business app, which is available for Android and iPhone, allows business managers to create updates that are pushed out to customers on the location-based platform. They can share the update on Facebook and Twitter as well. The app also allows business owners to turn specials on and off and monitor recent check-ins.

“Sometimes, when you’re running around on the floor, it’s hard to hop on a computer and post your latest happenings, like the spring collection that just arrived or your newest menu item,” Foursquare said in a blog post announcing the app.

More than 1 million businesses use Foursquare’s management tools on the Web, according to Foursquare.

The next year will be a crucial time for Foursquare. Shortly after a report stoked concerns about the long-term viability of its business Facebook’s Graph Search brought the blue giant squarely into Foursquare’s territory. Yet, Greencrest Capital, a financial research company, reported yesterday that Graph Search has “highlighted, rather validated, the growing value of services from Foursquare, Yelp” and others.

“Against this backdrop, Foursquare seems determined to stay ahead of the curve as it introduces new features to its service,” the report said.
