The 5 Best Reasons for Being a Good Boss

A project manager is smiling with his team behind him. When you are managing a project there are so many things to think about that the need to be a good boss might not be one of your top concerns. However, there are some very good reasons for doing this and the following are some you should definitely bear in mind.

Help Your Team Members

A top class project leader will make life easy for their team members. This means that they will enjoy their job, contribute more and have better career prospects as well. There are many different ways of doing this and we can’t really go through all of them in detail here. To put it simply, you need to imagine that you were in their position. Would be happy being thrown in at the deep end on a project you know nothing about or would you think that it was fair if you got all of the most boring jobs to do? If you look after your team members in the way you would like to be looked after then you can be pretty sure that you are being a good boss to them.

Feel Good

When you perform your role in leading the team well then you are going to feel good about yourself. After all, we all like to do a good job and feel that our efforts are appreciated. On the other hand, if you stumble through the team leading aspect in any way you can and don’t give it the respect it deserves then you are going to feel that you aren’t carrying out the role to the best of your abilities. Even if you are strong on other parts of the project manager job you will be unable to feel completely satisfied with how you do it until you become a good boss.

Progress Your Career

One of the biggest ways of helping your career is by becoming the kind of project leader who deserves to be given a more senior role in the firm. This makes sense because as you climb the career ladder you are more likely to be given a bigger team to control or have more need of your people skills in some other way. The fact that you can successfully lead a project team will help show to your bosses that you can be trusted to do a job in the next role up from the one you are doing. I have worked with some people who are technically very good but who never seem to progress as well as they might in their careers. Part of this is surely down to their people skills and, more specifically, their team leading ability. No one wants to promote a project manager who can’t lead their team well, after all.

Get the Project Completed

We are almost forgetting about the project here, aren’t we? Of course, if you are leading your team well and being a good boss then you will expect the whole thing to go a lot more smoothly. Some of the advantages to getting this aspect of the role right are the better communication you will promote, the better team spirit and the more enjoyable working environment. All of these things can help add up to a much better piece of work for you and, of course, for your team members. There are going to be some projects which are a struggle to get over the line and being a good boss is one of the easiest things you could do to make sure that this happens.

Build a Stronger Team

This could perhaps fit in with the previous point but it is so important that it is worth talking about it on its own instead.  One of the biggest factors which will determine whether or not you have success in your career as a project manager is the level of team spirit you build up. There are a lot of different factors which go into this but there is no denying that having a strong team spirit should be one of your priorities in this role. There are plenty of ways of going about it but being a good boss is one of the things you simply can’t afford to overlook. If you treat your team well and respect them then you will have a much better chance of making the whole thing work and have a group of workers you can rely on to help you out.
