October Is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month

It’s that time of year again — National Cybersecurity Awareness Month. In a year that’s seen bigger breaches than ever before, it’s time to really consider alternative security measures and improving security for the future. A handy infographic from the National Cybersecurity Alliance shows the best way to get involved this month.

The first step is for every user to “Stop. Think. Connect.” If more users are mindful of their security, then we could stop those terrible password habits. This is also a good time to start considering alternatives to password systems, and think more deeply about our security infrastructures.

This deeper thinking ties into weeks two and three of October, which focus on how IT departments develop new tools for security, and how the Internet of things needs to focus on robust security practices.

The last two weeks of the month will focus on SMB cybersecurity and cybercrime. SMBs may think they can fly under the radar of criminals because of their size, but if Target can be attacked so thoroughly, it could happen to anyone. Cybercrime is seeing increasing investigation from police, but the response could still be a lot better.
