Government requests for Facebook’s user information rose by about a quarter in the first half of 2014 over the second half of last year, the social media company has revealed. In the first six months of 2014, governments around the world made 34,946 requests for data – an increase of 24 percent on the same point in 2013. TIME Meanwhile, the number of government requests for content restriction rose by 19 percent, the report said. While government requests are made for criminal investigation purposes, Facebook said that it ensures that all inquires are legally sufficient. IBT The U.S. government led the world’s nations in the number of requests, the company said. The Indian government was second with 4,559 requests, followed by Germany with 2,537 requests. GigaOM The new Facebook numbers came on the same day as a high profile appeals court case challenging NSA spy procedures, and at a time when Twitter and other companies are aggressively using so-called warrant canaries in an attempt to call attention to surveillance tactics. Overall, the tech companies’ push for transparency is a welcome one at a time when the company is still digesting the Edward Snowden revelations.
