Google has overcome the last major barrier to launching its YouTube-based streaming music service. The streaming video platform has struck a deal to license music from smaller record labels, ending a dispute that had included threats to take down videos from acts including Adele and the Arctic Monkeys. GigaOM YouTube has signed a deal with Merlin, the independent music trade group that represents more than 2,000 indie labels including XL Recordings, Epitaph and Domino, according to a Financial Times report. A YouTube spokesperson declined to comment. FT The agreement paves the way for the Google-owned company to finally launch a paid-for music service, which will compete with Spotify, the Swedish streaming service, Deezer of France and Apple’s Beats Music. “One of the last significant obstacles to getting to market has been removed,” said Mark Mulligan, music analyst at Midia Research.
