Atari Looks to Gamify Exercise with Atari Fit on iOS, Android

Atari Fit

Atari has announced the release of Atari Fit on iOS and Android devices. The fitness app looks to gamify the traditional workout experience, encouraging users to keep pushing forward by rewarding them with access to classic Atari games or with Walgreens Balance Rewards Points.

Atari FitThe Atari Fit app connects to other health and fitness apps, like Apple Health and RunKeeper, as well as fitness wearables. Users can log their independent workouts and runs in the app’s database, browsing a selection of exercises in categories including Abs, Cardio, and Classic, as examples. Users can also input their own custom exercises. These can be further detailed by tracking the number of sets or reps (where applicable), as well as the duration of the exercise or run.

The app offers more than 30 workout plans for users looking to start a new routine. One is available for free to get users started, while the rest can be unlocked using individual paid unlocks, or a paid subscription (from $2.99 to $8.99, depending on the duration, from three to 12 months).

As users complete workouts and log their daily activities, they’ll earn coins used to unlock access to three classic Atari games (Centipede, Pong and Super Breakout), with more coming soon.

Social features allow users to create teams, where they’ll work together to encourage their friends (or even compete against them), while users can post updates to Twitter and Facebook to share their achievements with others. Finally, the unlockable Atari games offer worldwide leaderboards for tracking high scores against other players.

Fred Chesnais, CEO of Atari, said in a statement:

With Atari Fit, players from around the globe can exercise, play and get healthy together by providing a gamified fitness experience unlike any other app currently available. By uniting the universal need to exercise and live healthfully with the entertaining experience unique to Atari games, we’ve created an app that proves fitness can be fun.

Atari Fit is available to download for free on the iTunes App Store and Google Play.
