Internet.org App Debuts in Colombia

InternetOrgAppColombia650Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg continued his quest to connect the rest of the world to the Web, announcing at an Internet.org event in Bogotá, Colombia, that the Internet.org application is now available to Tigo customers in Colombia.

The app is also available in Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia.

Subscribers to wireless carrier Tigo will be able to access the following services free-of-charge:

The social network said in a Newsroom post announcing the app’s Colombian launch:

This is the first time the Internet.org app is available in Latin America, and it’s also the first to include government services as part of the other free basic services in the areas of education, health, communication, jobs, finance and local information.

Making the Internet accessible through a set of basic services can lead to more people getting online and discovering services they might not have otherwise. We’ll continue to add additional services and bring the app to other parts of the world.

Internet.org vice president Chris Daniels said in a release from AccuWeather:

We are excited to expand the Internet.org app into a new region by offering the people of Colombia access to useful basic internet services for free. By working with content partners, operators and local governments we are making Internet services more accessible and are providing people with information that can help them create new opportunities and improve their lives.

And AccuWeather chief digital officer Steven Smith added:

AccuWeather is pleased to continue our work with Internet.org through this historic expansion into South America. Together, we are making essential online weather forecasts and warnings affordable and accessible to people in Colombia. Whether protecting users’ travel plans or guarding their property and safety, AccuWeather provides the power of accurate and localized forecasts that improve the quality of peoples’ lives all over the world.
